GLOBAL MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY COMPANY

Transforming Underutilized Space into a Precision R&D Lab for Cardiovascular Innovation

Driven by a mission to improve patient lives, this global medical technology company continues to advance solutions for those facing cardiovascular disease. To support that work, the organization sought to expand its research and development capabilities within its existing Irvine, California campus. The opportunity centered on reimagining an underutilized space as a high-performance R&D lab, one capable of supporting specialized testing, detailed analysis, and the rapid pace of medical innovation.

HED partnered with the client to deliver a full-service renovation, bringing together lab planning, architecture, interior design, and engineering in a coordinated effort. This integrated approach aligned technical requirements with user needs from the outset, shaping a space that supports both precision and productivity. The design focuses on clarity and efficiency, creating an environment where researchers and engineers can move seamlessly between tasks, tools, and insights.

Within a compact 3,500 SF footprint, the lab is organized around highly specialized program areas. Dedicated spaces for dimensional analysis, a fume hood alcove, and fatigue and advanced wear testing support critical aspects of product development and validation. Each zone is calibrated to meet the demands of cardiovascular device research, allowing teams to conduct rigorous testing with consistency and accuracy while maintaining intuitive workflows.

The project’s performance is anchored by thoughtfully designed infrastructure. New reverse osmosis deionized water and nitrogen systems support advanced testing processes, providing the reliability and control required for sensitive experimentation. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems were closely coordinated with the architectural design, resulting in a cohesive laboratory environment. Adjacent workplace areas further strengthen functionality, allowing teams to move easily between focused work, collaboration, and hands-on testing.

Delivered through a design-bid-build approach, the $2.75 million renovation demonstrates how thoughtful design can unlock new value within an existing facility. The transformed space expands the company’s ability to develop and validate emerging technologies, supporting high standards of quality and performance. This project reflects HED’s positioning as a trusted partner, creating environments that advance innovation while supporting meaningful progress in global patient care.
