Yerba Buena Performing Fine Arts Building

East Side Union High School District
San Jose, CA

At Yerba Buena High School in San Jose, the East Side Union High School District envisioned a performing arts facility that could serve as more than a theater. Traditional high school performance halls often sit unused for much of the year, reserved for occasional productions or assemblies. HED’s design for the performing arts building reimagines this model, creating a flexible environment where performance, learning, and interaction can occur simultaneously.

The design strategy was rooted in two goals: serving immediate student needs while planning for the future. The building fosters pride, ownership, and identity by providing spaces that are adaptable, accessible, and engaging. Every element supports creativity across a spectrum of activities, from scheduled productions to impromptu student collaborations.

Flexibility is expressed through a series of interconnected spaces. The performance hall itself features fully retractable seating, operable glazed partitions, and multiple lighting grid locations, allowing the room to transform from a formal theater to a classroom, gallery, or event space. Adjacent lobby and gallery areas are designed to serve as extensions of the stage, enabling both intimate and large-scale performances. These spaces are just as valuable for daily activity—student meetings, rehearsals, and exhibitions—as they are for evening productions.

A bold design language reinforces the building’s sense of occasion. Curved ceiling baffles sweep from the lobby into the performance hall, framing the proscenium and heightening the drama of entering the space. Walls of textured plaster add both tactile and visual interest, making circulation routes and gathering areas feel like part of the theater experience rather than secondary to it. In this way, the architecture celebrates performance while also elevating the everyday use of the building.

By maximizing functionality, the design aligns with the District’s commitment to efficient space utilization. Instead of investing in a facility that might only serve a few events per year, the Performing Arts Building operates as a year-round hub for student engagement. Informal collaboration, impromptu performances, and cross-disciplinary learning take place in spaces once considered secondary, turning underutilized areas into vital parts of campus life.

More than a performance venue, the building is a catalyst for creativity and connection. It provides students with an environment that supports exploration in the arts while also reinforcing identity and pride in their school community. For Yerba Buena High School, the Performing Arts Building is about expanding the possibilities of how space can inspire, engage, and adapt to the needs of students today and into the future.
