Designing a Timeless Workplace for Northern Trust
HED led the design of the Northern Trust Wealth Management Office in Clayton, Missouri, creating a workplace that reflects both the company’s distinguished history and its forward-looking service model. Located on the sixth floor of the Forsyth Pointe office tower, the space was envisioned as a sophisticated environment where clients feel welcomed and staff are supported with flexible, high-performing work settings.
The design draws from the architectural heritage of St. Louis, incorporating material selections that are both timeless and rooted in place. Walnut wood, warm brick, and classic marble establish a foundation of elegance and durability, while subtle arch details recall the city’s historic architecture. Brass accents and a palette of rich colors add refinement and warmth, culminating in a branded reception desk that provides an inviting first impression.
Beyond aesthetics, the workplace is designed to support a variety of workstyles. Private huddle rooms and conference rooms provide settings for focused conversations, while a library offers a quiet, contemplative space for reading or individual work. A work café with a range of seating arrangements serves as the heart of collaboration, giving staff a comfortable and flexible environment for informal meetings, shared meals, and daily connection.
The result is a workplace that balances tradition with modernity, offering Northern Trust a space that is as functional as it is welcoming. By thoughtfully integrating brand identity with the history of its surroundings, HED created an office that embodies the company’s values and positions it as a trusted presence in the St. Louis community.
