Expanding Creative Exploration Through STEAM and Visual Arts

At Livermore High School in Livermore, California, the district set out to expand opportunities for student creativity while addressing the limitations of aging facilities. The vision extended beyond adding space. It called for a thoughtful reimagining of how students engage with both the arts and sciences, and how those disciplines intersect in a modern K–12 learning environment. Initiated during design development ahead of the district’s 2026 bond funding, the project reflects a strategic, forward-looking investment in the campus. It also builds on a growing partnership with Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District, grounded in trust, shared priorities, and a commitment to enriching the student experience through thoughtful, integrated design.

The project pairs the renovation of an existing music classroom building with a new STEAM facility on an adjacent site, creating a cohesive environment that supports both performance and visual disciplines. The updated music building strengthens established programs, while the new facility introduces flexible, hands-on spaces for exploration across science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. Together, they form a unified hub where creativity and inquiry are equally valued.

Architecturally, the design respects the historic character of the campus, reinforcing continuity and a sense of place. Inside, the focus shifts to the creative process. Learning is made visible through integrated display areas that highlight sketches, prototypes, data, and reflections. These moments of transparency celebrate iteration and invite students to engage more deeply with their work, building resilience and critical thinking along the way.

A careful balance of shared and individual spaces shapes the student experience. Open, collaborative zones support conversation, teamwork, and the exchange of ideas across disciplines. Outdoor areas extend learning beyond the classroom, offering informal settings for gathering and reflection. At the same time, quieter spaces provide room for focus and independent exploration. This duality acknowledges that innovation emerges through both collective energy and personal discovery.

This modernization and new construction project demonstrates how targeted investment can elevate educational environments. More broadly, it positions Livermore High School as a place where creativity is visible, supported, and embedded in daily learning. By aligning arts and STEAM education within a connected, flexible setting, the project strengthens the school’s role as a dynamic center for exploration, expression, and growth.
