Specialty Surgical Center Renovation
Located along Wilshire Boulevard in the heart of Beverly Hills, this project reimagined the first floor of an existing medical building as a dedicated Ophthalmology Specialty Surgical Center. HED provided full architectural services for the renovation, supporting the client’s goal of creating a modern, highly functional ambulatory surgery center designed to meet OSHPD 3 certification requirements while elevating the patient and staff experience.
The challenge centered on transforming an existing building into a technically rigorous surgical environment without losing the sense of calm and clarity essential to outpatient ophthalmology care. The program required a broad range of clinical, support, and administrative spaces, all carefully organized within a 10,000-square-foot footprint. HED approached the renovation with a focus on operational flow, patient comfort, and regulatory compliance, balancing technical precision with thoughtful design.
The completed surgical center includes a patient waiting room, reception, public restrooms, ASC business offices, and a full suite of clinical spaces. These include six operating rooms, three procedure rooms, fourteen post-surgical beds, pre-op and post-op areas, an operating room corridor, a central sterile and decontamination room, a YAG laser room, nurse’s station, staff locker rooms, a staff lounge, and dedicated storage, material management, and receiving areas. The layout supports clear circulation patterns that separate public, patient, and staff zones, helping clinical teams work efficiently while maintaining privacy and comfort for patients.
Design expression plays a key role in shaping the experience of the center. HED developed a modern, restrained aesthetic built around simple yet bold horizontal and vertical planes. Clean lines and carefully composed spatial relationships create a sense of order and confidence, reinforcing the precision associated with ophthalmic care. Lighting and color were used deliberately as focal elements, offering visual interest and subtle wayfinding cues throughout the space.
These design features are most prominent in the public waiting area, where light, proportion, and material choices establish a welcoming first impression. That same language carries into the prep and recovery zones, providing continuity and helping patients transition through their surgical experience with ease. The result is an environment that feels composed and intentional, supporting both emotional comfort and clinical performance.
Completed in 2017, the Beverly Hills Surgery Center renovation delivered a highly specialized outpatient surgical environment that aligns advanced medical functionality with a refined architectural presence. Through careful planning and design, HED helped create a facility that supports efficient operations, meets stringent healthcare standards, and offers a patient-centered experience suited to its Beverly Hills setting.
