Petite Edith Restaurant Build-out

Crafting a Layered Dining Experience Rooted in Parisian Tradition and Chicago Energy

In Chicago’s dynamic restaurant landscape, Petite Edith set out to create more than a place to dine. The vision called for an intimate, sensory-rich French bistro that could balance refinement with warmth, and elegance with the city’s unmistakable edge. For Michelin-starred restaurateurs Jenner Tomaska and Katrina Bravo, the project represented an opportunity to translate their culinary perspective into a physical environment, one that supports both the rhythm of service and the experience of every guest.

The challenge centered on transforming a raw, ground-floor shell into a cohesive, highly tuned hospitality setting within a compact 5,000-square-foot footprint. HED approached the project as a close, creative partnership, aligning early with the client to shape a shared vision.

This collaborative mindset reflects a broader commitment to integrated design, where ideas are explored collectively and decisions gain clarity through dialogue. From the outset, architecture and interiors worked in concert to choreograph how the space would feel, function, and unfold over time. Every move was deliberate, grounded in proportion, material, and the subtle cues that shape human comfort.

Elegant restaurant interior with floral mural, patrons dining, and waiter serving wine. Cozy ambiance with artistic decor.

The resulting 80-seat restaurant is composed as a series of layered experiences. Rich materials such as dark wood and glowing brass establish a sense of depth and permanence, while soft curves guide movement and soften transitions between dining zones. Seating areas are carefully scaled to maintain intimacy without isolation, allowing the energy of the room to build naturally. Architectural elements are integrated with restraint, shaping the environment without competing for attention, and keeping the focus on the culinary craft at the heart of the space.

Acoustics, lighting, and spatial proportion were treated as essential design tools. Sound is moderated to support conversation while preserving vibrancy. Lighting is warm and calibrated, creating a sense of ease that shifts subtly throughout the dining experience. These elements work together to produce a comfort that feels intuitive, never overstated. The space invites guests to settle in, linger, and return.

Petite Edith demonstrates how thoughtful interior architecture can elevate hospitality design. It translates complex ideas into a clear, immersive environment that feels both curated and effortless. The project reflects HED’s positioning as a company that thrives in close collaboration, bringing together diverse perspectives to shape spaces that resonate on a human level. In a city known for its culinary ambition, this restaurant offers a distinct and enduring experience, one where design and dining move in sync.
