Modernizing Transitional Kindergarten Classrooms

Menlo Park City School District partnered with HED to modernize two transitional kindergarten (TK) spaces on separate elementary campuses (Oak Knoll & Encinal Elementary Schools), both on the same aggressive schedule.

The challenge: updating existing 1950s-era buildings with limited as-built documentation, while meeting the district’s goals for security, wayfinding, and cost-effective design.

To address these challenges, HED led a rigorous pre-design phase that combined research and technology to gather the most accurate information possible. The team reviewed all available Division of the State Architect (DSA) documentation, conducted detailed site surveys, and laser-scanned the existing buildings. This process provided precise baseline data and reduced the risk of surprises during construction. An essential step given the schedule and budget constraints.

Close collaboration with district staff throughout planning ensured that goals, space needs, and financial targets were consistently aligned. This ongoing communication allowed the team to anticipate challenges and implement practical solutions while keeping the projects on track.

One of the most significant efficiencies came from the careful planning of new TK restrooms. By strategically locating them near existing water and sewer utilities, the design minimized costly infrastructure work while still meeting program requirements. This simple but effective decision helped stretch the project budget and redirect resources to other priorities.

The modernizations also provided an opportunity to solve broader campus challenges. Security and wayfinding improvements were incorporated into the design, creating safer, clearer, and more welcoming environments for students and families. These upgrades addressed long-standing issues while supporting the district’s vision for modern, accessible campuses.

Despite the constraints, the project delivered upgraded TK classrooms that provide age-appropriate, engaging environments for the district’s youngest learners. The renovated spaces meet modern program standards while respecting the context of the existing campuses.

The Menlo Park TK modernizations illustrate how early planning, integrated communication, and strategic decision-making can unlock efficiencies even in challenging conditions. By modernizing these two classrooms, the district not only created better learning environments for its students but also reinforced a long-term strategy for campus improvement.
