Materials Discovery Laboratory
Reimagining Laboratory Space
HED was engaged to design a new materials discovery lab for a globally recognized confidential client known for advancing scientific innovation. The client’s vision called for a modern research workplace that could maximize efficiency, encourage collaboration, and adapt to future needs, all within the constraints of an existing multitenant laboratory building at the Illinois Science and Technology Park.
The project transformed the tenant space, reconfiguring older laboratory and office areas into a state-of-the-art scientific workplace. HED’s design strategy emphasized making the most of the existing infrastructure while seamlessly integrating new casework, systems, and equipment. Careful planning enhanced physical access and workflow between labs, improving safety and efficiency without compromising the budget.
Transparency was a key design principle. Large expanses of butt-glazed glass connect labs to office areas and tenant corridors, giving the space a sense of openness and visibility. This strategy not only enhances safety by allowing occupants to see into labs and monitor activity, but also creates a vibrant interplay between research, open offices, and visitor areas. By placing science on display, the design underscores the client’s identity as a hub of innovation.
One of the most impactful interventions was the addition of a “ghost corridor,” a design concept proposed early in the process and carried through to construction. The corridor links four lab spaces together, allowing researchers to move efficiently between them without entering the adjacent open office areas. This reduces unnecessary foot traffic in office zones, minimizes cross-contamination risks, and facilitates the smooth transport of carts and materials.
By creating a dedicated internal circulation path for lab users, the ghost corridor balances efficiency with safety and precision.
Office areas were designed to support a rapidly expanding research institute. Spaces maximize efficiency while fostering a dynamic, adaptable environment where collaboration can thrive. Flexibility was built into layouts to anticipate future program shifts and organizational growth, allowing the facility to remain resilient to change.
By combining efficiency, transparency, and innovation, the project created a modern discovery lab that supports both the science and the scientists behind it. For the client, the new lab is a platform for discovery that reflects their reputation for innovation and provides the infrastructure needed to continue shaping the future of materials science.
