Reimagining Kendrick Lakes Elementary with a Flexible, Student-Centered Learning Environment

Kendrick Lakes Elementary has been reimagined as a vibrant, next-generation school designed to support 435 PK–5 students. Built on the same site as the original school, the new building replaces outdated infrastructure with an environment that emphasizes flexibility, collaboration, and strong connections to the outdoors. With bright, open spaces and abundant natural light, it provides an inspiring setting where learning and play flow seamlessly together.

The design process was deeply collaborative. Guided by a design advisory group that included educators, administrators, parents, and community members, HED developed a vision rooted in the belief that every part of the building should foster curiosity and engagement. This approach created a holistic learning environment, where spaces are not limited by traditional definitions but instead serve multiple purposes, encouraging students and teachers to use them in dynamic ways.

Classrooms are supported by an array of flexible learning zones that extend education beyond four walls. Corridors incorporate small breakout spaces and informal “eddies” where students can gather for impromptu collaboration or quiet reflection. Writable walls and versatile furniture reinforce the idea that the entire building is a canvas for creativity, allowing teachers to adapt spaces to different subjects, group sizes, and teaching methods.

Outdoor learning is central to the design. A dedicated courtyard offers opportunities for hands-on lessons in science, art, or group projects, strengthening the connection between students and the natural world. Large windows throughout the building frame views of the landscape, bringing daylight deep into the interior while underscoring the school’s connection to its site. These features not only reduce energy use but also create uplifting spaces that support focus and well-being.

The school also incorporates spaces for specialized programs. Gifted and talented education is woven into the building, ensuring that students with advanced learning needs are both challenged and supported. This commitment to inclusivity makes Kendrick Lakes Elementary a place where every learner can thrive, regardless of learning style or pace.

Beyond supporting curriculum, the school was envisioned as a community asset. Its central commons, outdoor spaces, and gathering areas create opportunities for after-hours use by families and local organizations, reinforcing the school’s role as a hub of neighborhood activity. By investing in a building that is both forward-looking and deeply rooted in its community, the district created a resource that benefits not only current students but generations to come.

Kendrick Lakes Elementary reflects a broader transformation in educational design, moving away from rigid, one-size-fits-all models toward spaces that celebrate diversity, foster collaboration, and empower students to take ownership of their learning. By blending natural light, adaptable learning zones, and intentional community connections, the new school stands as a dynamic and inclusive environment where young learners are equipped to grow, create, and succeed.
