Creating Outdoor Learning Opportunities Beyond the Classroom
Learning does not begin and end at the classroom door. Recognizing the value of outdoor environments as extensions of the educational experience, this project transforms an underutilized campus area into a flexible outdoor learning setting that supports instruction, collaboration, and student engagement throughout the year.
Funded through a PUC Grant, the project was driven by a desire to expand learning opportunities while improving comfort, accessibility, and long-term campus resilience. The goal was straightforward yet meaningful: create an outdoor environment where educators could teach, students could gather, and learning could unfold in a variety of ways, regardless of season or weather conditions.
At the center of the project is a new shade structure that brings both function and identity to the space. More than a shelter from the elements, the structure creates a comfortable outdoor room that supports a range of educational activities, from small-group discussions and collaborative projects to larger instructional gatherings. By providing protection from sun exposure and creating a more inviting setting, the structure extends the usability of the campus and encourages students and educators to engage with learning in a different way.
The project’s success stemmed from a thoughtful, integrated design approach. Working closely with civil and landscape consultants, the team developed a coordinated site solution that addressed critical infrastructure needs alongside the user experience. Accessibility improvements support equitable access for all users, while drainage enhancements strengthen site performance and resilience over time. These technical considerations were carefully woven into the overall design, creating a space that functions seamlessly within the existing campus environment.
Equally important was the project’s connection to the broader campus. Rather than standing apart, the outdoor learning area feels like a natural extension of the school’s existing spaces and circulation patterns. This integration creates a safe, welcoming environment that supports both structured instruction and informal interaction throughout the day.
Today, the outdoor learning environment expands the range of spaces available to students and educators while enriching the daily campus experience. By combining thoughtful design, infrastructure improvements, and flexible educational programming, the project demonstrates how even targeted site investments can create lasting value. The result is a durable, adaptable learning setting that supports evolving teaching methods, strengthens campus resilience, and provides students with new opportunities to connect, collaborate, and learn in the open air.
