Creating a Connected and Future-Ready Campus Experience
HED partnered with Palo Alto Unified School District to revitalize key areas of Gunn High School, creating spaces that better support learning, collaboration, and community life. The comprehensive renovation spans multiple buildings and outdoor spaces, transforming the campus into a more cohesive and student-centered environment.
The project includes the design of three major facilities, each addressing a distinct need within the school community. Building A houses a new administrative suite and a large meeting space that improves accessibility and connection between students, staff, and visitors. The reconfigured layout strengthens visibility and engagement across campus while providing modern, efficient workspaces that reflect the school’s commitment to openness and collaboration.
Building B introduces a new food service facility with an expanded kitchen, student dining area, and a state-of-the-art culinary arts lab. The addition of a design studio classroom connects academic learning with real-world application, giving students hands-on experience in food preparation, nutrition, and design thinking. Together, these spaces create an active hub for both learning and daily life, encouraging interaction among students and staff while supporting wellness and inclusion.
The renovation of Building K converts an existing structure into two modern science lab classrooms designed for flexibility and innovation. Each lab accommodates diverse teaching styles and experimental learning, with integrated technology and adaptable layouts that promote collaboration. The updated facilities allow teachers to expand curriculum possibilities and provide students with a more dynamic, inquiry-driven science experience.
Site improvements throughout the project strengthen the overall campus experience. New outdoor dining areas create comfortable gathering spaces that extend learning and social activities outdoors. Updated entryways and improved service access enhance circulation and safety, providing a more intuitive and connected campus flow.
Through thoughtful planning and design, HED’s work at Gunn High School enhances how students and staff experience their environment; turning previously utilitarian areas into spaces that inspire learning and foster community. By blending functionality with a sense of place, the project reinforces Palo Alto Unified School District’s mission to create meaningful, future-ready educational environments.
