Stacking Innovation to Accelerate Autonomous Vehicle Development
Veoneer was formed to lead the future of autonomous driving and active safety systems. As a new company emerging from Autoliv, it needed more than a workplace. It needed a technical center that could embody its ambition, attract top engineering talent, and accelerate the pace of research and product development. The challenge was to bring advanced automotive testing, collaborative engineering environments, and meaningful employee amenities together within a compact footprint, while expressing a confident new identity in the market.
HED partnered with Veoneer and the developer–contractor team from the earliest stages, working as an integrated group to unlock the full potential of the site. This early alignment shaped both the building’s form and its function. Research and automotive testing labs were strategically placed at ground level, where access, loading, and structural capacity best support heavy equipment and rapid prototyping. Above, open workspaces for product development engineers create visual connectivity and shared energy across teams. By stacking the program vertically, the 180,000-square-foot technical center fits within a cost-effective four-story volume, maximizing site utilization without compromising performance.
At the heart of the building, the traditional centralized core was repositioned to the exterior. This move opened the interior to a linear collaborative hub that runs through the facility, highly visible and easily accessed from every department. Engineering platforms line this central spine, putting innovation on display and fostering spontaneous exchange between disciplines. The result is a workplace that supports speed to market. Teams can move from concept to testing to refinement with clarity and proximity, reducing friction in the development cycle.
The ground-floor lab environment is robust and flexible, designed to support innovation incubation and hands-on automotive testing. Above, light-filled open offices encourage transparency and teamwork. On the top floor, shared amenity spaces bring a different rhythm to the workday. A café, fitness center, training rooms, and an outdoor deck overlook the adjacent wetland, offering long views and fresh air. A white metal-clad overhang floats above the fourth-floor terrace and folds down the east and west façades, creating a distinct architectural identity along the street. This crisp form contrasts with the surrounding earth-toned context and signals Veoneer’s forward-looking mission.
The ground up technical center positions Veoneer as a serious force in automotive technology. It is a smart, high-performance facility that supports advanced engineering, visible collaboration, and employee well-being within a compact, efficient structure. Through thoughtful integration of architecture and engineering, the project translates innovation into built form, creating a workplace where autonomous vehicle research and active safety systems can evolve with clarity, purpose, and speed.
