Consolidating Training to Strengthen Safety and Science
For a confidential federal client dedicated to advancing scientific research and national security, safety is a cornerstone of mission success. To strengthen that foundation, the client sought to unify several dispersed Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) training programs into a single, purpose-built facility. The goal was twofold: to improve operational efficiency and to create a more immersive environment where staff could engage directly with the tools, materials, and methods essential to laboratory safety.
HED partnered with the client to design and engineer a new ES&H training facility, located within the client’s secure campus. The project involved adapting an existing prototype to a new site within the block. Rather than starting from scratch, HED mirrored and modified the design to meet new site constraints and future capacity needs, transforming it into a flexible, high-performance training environment.
Inside, the design brings together classrooms, laboratories, and collaborative spaces that bridge instruction and application. Specialized labs replicate real-world science and safety conditions, allowing trainees to practice procedures in an environment that mirrors their day-to-day work. Adjacent presentation areas and shared workstations foster both concentration and exchange, supporting a continuum of learning that spans from technical drills to policy discussions.
Every detail of the design reflects the client’s priority on preparedness and precision. By co-locating once-dispersed programs, the building improves accessibility and streamlines scheduling, making it easier to scale training capacity across disciplines. The integration of mechanical, electrical, and structural systems was carefully engineered to accommodate the facility’s unique technical requirements, ensuring a safe and adaptable setting for evolving scientific needs.
HED’s integrated team, comprising architects, engineers, and laboratory planners, approached the project as a single, cohesive effort. Working in synchrony from the outset allowed for early alignment between disciplines and a faster, clearer decision-making process. This collaborative model not only supported cost predictability but also enabled design refinements in real time, resulting in a more responsive and efficient delivery.
The new ES&H training building embodies a renewed commitment to the culture of safety that underpins the client’s broader mission. Through thoughtful planning, technical rigor, and integrated design, HED helped create a place where knowledge and practice converge in a setting that prepares people to meet the demands of complex, high-stakes work with clarity and confidence.
