A Modern Aquatic Center Built for Competition and Community
The new El Modena High School Aquatic Center replaces an outdated pool with a modern facility that serves both student-athletes and the broader community. For decades, the pool served as a gathering place for the community of Orange, but it could no longer support the demands of competitive aquatics or community recreation. The Orange Unified School District responded with a facility that honors the school’s athletic legacy while providing a durable, future-ready resource.
HED partnered with the district to design a 30-meter competition pool that reflects the evolution of aquatics programs. Expanding from the original 25 meters to 30 meters, the new pool increases training and competition capacity. Student-athletes now benefit from 10 full lanes, a Colorado Timing system, and a new scoreboard, creating an environment aligned with the standards of modern swim meets and water polo tournaments. The larger format allows more athletes to train side by side, fostering both team performance and individual growth.
The surrounding deck was carefully planned to maximize usability within the original footprint. Shade canopies cover the bleachers, providing comfort for spectators during long events under the California sun. LED lighting illuminates both deck and pool with energy-efficient, glare-controlled precision, supporting evening competitions while reducing operational costs. Heated outdoor showers, new locker rooms, and four restroom facilities expand amenities for both students and visiting teams. Storage, a training area, and a snack bar further support the versatility of the space.
The aquatic center was designed with integration in mind. Concrete masonry block walls and steel-framed roofing elements echo the architectural vocabulary of the campus, creating continuity between old and new. Equally important was coordination with the concurrent construction of the school’s new Science Center. To prevent disruptions, HED’s integrated design teams sequenced the early installation of underground conduits, utilities, and service lines with care. Precise routing of ductwork, plumbing, and fire protection systems within the locker room building balanced new and reused HVAC equipment to stay within budget while achieving reliable performance.
The El Modena Aquatic Center functions as a community resource, opening to residents during off-hours strengthening neighborhood connections as a high-quality venue for water sports. The expanded facility now supports training, competition, and recreation in a way that reflects the district’s broader commitment to student wellness and city-wide engagement.
The new facility proudly elevates El Modena’s athletic programs while creating a lasting resource for the wider Orange community.
