Next Generation STEM Education

At MiraCosta College’s Oceanside campus, a new Chemistry and Biotechnology Building is setting the stage for the next generation of STEM education. Designed by HED in a design-build partnership with C.W. Driver, the project provides state-of-the-art instructional space that will expand the college’s capacity for teaching, research, and student collaboration.

The new facility includes modern chemistry laboratories and 40-person classrooms designed for flexibility. Each space is equipped to support multiple modes of instruction, allowing faculty to adapt quickly from lectures to hands-on labs, group discussions, or collaborative projects. This adaptability is central to the college’s mission of preparing students for careers in rapidly evolving STEM fields, where the ability to problem-solve and work in teams is just as important as technical knowledge.

The building also provides a new home for MiraCosta’s expanding Biotechnology program. As the program grows—particularly with the introduction of its baccalaureate degree—the need for specialized labs and collaborative environments has increased. The Chemistry and Biotechnology Building responds with spaces that integrate advanced technology and lab infrastructure, allowing students to gain practical experience with tools and environments that mirror those found in professional settings.

Beyond labs and classrooms, the design emphasizes a mix of instructional, social, and work areas. Informal gathering spaces encourage students to collaborate outside of class, blurring the line between academic and social life. This integrated approach creates a building that is not only a center for coursework but also a hub for innovation and community, where students and faculty can exchange ideas and pursue research in an environment that is open, engaging, and supportive.

As part of MiraCosta Community College District’s long-term strategy to enhance STEM education, the project pushes the curriculum to the next level by embedding flexibility and technology throughout. Instructional spaces are activated by the integration of modern teaching tools, allowing the building to adapt as programs evolve. This forward-looking approach keeps the facility relevant and effective well into the future, equipping students with the skills needed to thrive in biotechnology, chemistry, and related industries.

A 2025 recipient of an Architecture Merit Award from AIA San Diego, the Chemistry and Biotechnology Building represents a significant investment in student success and community impact. With its combination of flexible classrooms, advanced labs, and collaborative learning environments, it will serve as a cornerstone for STEM education at MiraCosta College, providing a space where curiosity, innovation, and opportunity intersect.
