Canyon Hills High School Campus Modernization
Reimagining Canyon Hills High School Athletics as a Welcoming Campus Gateway
At Canyon Hills High School in San Diego, much of the campus had remained unchanged since its original construction in the mid-1970s. A pre-schematic assessment revealed aging facilities, outdated athletic amenities, and limited accessibility across key areas of student life. For San Diego Unified School District, the need was clear: modernize the campus in a way that supports today’s students, strengthens school identity, and creates a more inclusive and connected experience for both athletes and the broader community.
HED approached the Canyon Hills High School Campus Modernization as an opportunity to redefine how athletics function within the life of the school. Rather than treating sports facilities as isolated elements, the design establishes a cohesive front door to campus life. A new athletics gateway and promenade anchor the transformation, reshaping the main entrance into a clear, welcoming threshold. Thoughtful integration of signage and branding reinforces the identity of the Rattlers, while accessible pathways and ramps create a seamless arrival experience for all students, families, and visitors.
The design extends beyond first impressions to address the full spectrum of athletic and support facilities. New tennis courts and temporary basketball courts expand opportunities for play and practice, while upgraded track surfacing, field turf, and irrigation systems improve performance and durability for both school and joint-use community fields. These enhancements reflect a practical understanding of how heavily these spaces are used, balancing resilience with day-to-day functionality.
Supporting buildings, including new restrooms, concessions, and storage, bring comfort and convenience to game days and campus events. Inside, modernized locker rooms, restrooms, and coaches’ offices create spaces that feel current, functional, and aligned with student needs. Each intervention works together to elevate the overall experience, from pre-game preparation to post-event gathering.
Throughout the project, coordination across disciplines allowed design and infrastructure improvements to move forward with clarity and purpose. By aligning site design, architecture, and engineering early, the team navigated existing campus constraints while delivering a cohesive and buildable solution. This integrated approach supported smarter decision-making and helped maintain momentum from concept through construction.
Today, Canyon Hills High School presents a renewed identity rooted in access, pride, and community connection. The upgraded athletics facilities do more than support sports; they create spaces where students gather, compete, and celebrate. The new gateway and promenade establish a strong sense of arrival, while the revitalized fields and amenities invite broader community use.
This modernization positions Canyon Hills High School as a campus that reflects the energy and aspirations of its students. It stands as a thoughtful investment in both daily experience and long-term value, strengthening the role of the school as a shared resource for San Diego.
