Designing a Neighborhood-Inspired Senior Living Community in Mayfield Heights

In Mayfield Heights, Ohio, HED partnered on the design of a new senior living community nestled within a lively neighborhood of local shops and natural preserves. The two-story residence was conceived as more than a place to live. It was designed as a community, combining independent and assisted living with memory care services, and complemented by luxury cottages to provide a variety of residential options.

The architectural approach was rooted in context. Drawing inspiration from the nearby historic main street of Cleveland Heights, the design of the main building adopts a townhouse aesthetic with traditional masonry and concrete detailing. This strategy grounds the community in its local setting while presenting a warm and familiar appearance that feels both dignified and approachable.

Defining scale was an important challenge, as the main building is long and narrow. To break down its mass and create a sense of destination, the design emphasizes entries and varied architectural gestures along the exterior. This gives the impression of multiple smaller buildings rather than a single large one, helping residents and visitors feel more connected to their surroundings.

Inside, HED’s design centered on the idea of neighborhoods. Each residential wing is organized around a courtyard, introducing light, fresh air, and a sense of openness into the building. These courtyards act as activity hubs, just steps from residents’ doors, making it easy to engage in social gatherings, wellness activities, or quiet reflection outdoors. At the same time, the courtyards define the boundaries of smaller neighborhoods within the larger community, fostering identity, connection, and pride of place.

The design also supports memory care through intuitive circulation and visibility. Residents are empowered to wander freely and safely, always remaining within sight of destinations, neighbors, and staff. This balance of independence and oversight strengthens both dignity and peace of mind.

By blending thoughtful architecture, contextual materials, and neighborhood-scale planning, HED helped create a senior living campus that supports well-being, independence, and community. The result is a place that feels familiar yet modern, where residents can thrive within a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment.
