Creating a Gateway for Technical Learning

Automotive technology is typically a back-of-house trade. Training happens in service bays and workshops, in spaces shaped around machinery, vehicles, and the practical demands of the work. At Los Angeles Trade-Technical College (LATTC), the Advanced Transportation & Manufacturing Facility (ATM) brings that work forward, creating a visible gateway that celebrates technical education and the students preparing to shape the future of transportation.

The project replaces existing facilities with a unified home for automotive, diesel, collision repair, electronics, hybrid and electric vehicle, motorcycle, and rail vehicle programs. Located at a prominent edge of campus, the building occupies a uniquely urban and dense Los Angeles site, adjacent to major campus circulation routes and public transit connections. Its position requires a careful balance between complex vehicular circulation and clear, welcoming connections for students, faculty, and visitors.

The Advanced Transportation & Manufacturing Facility organizes the program around two connected elements: a high-bay manufacturing base and an academic tower. Together, they physically and symbolically connect hands-on technical training with classroom learning. Specialized laboratories, flexible lecture spaces, faculty offices, student support areas, and study spaces complement high-bay shops and vehicle training areas, allowing students to move fluidly between theory and practice.

Drawing from themes of acceleration, motion, and technological advancement, the building reflects an industry undergoing rapid change. Large openings align with workshop drive aisles, while a dynamic screening system filters daylight deep into traditionally industrial spaces. These strategies create visual connections to the campus and place the activity of making, testing, repairing, and learning on display.

That visibility is central to the project’s identity. Rather than concealing automotive technology behind opaque walls, the facility gives the discipline a public presence. The architecture turns a typically hidden trade into an active campus gateway, celebrating the skill, precision, and technical knowledge behind transportation and manufacturing careers.

Inside, abundant daylight, natural ventilation, visual connectivity, and access to outdoor learning and respite spaces create a more thoughtful experience for students. Flexible instructional environments also support changing teaching methods and evolving transportation technologies.
