A Flexible, Branded Workplace for Growing Teams
As the anchor tenant at 333 South Wabash, Northern Trust occupies nearly half of the building—a defining presence in Chicago’s Loop. To support continued growth and evolving team structures, the company expanded its footprint with a 29,000-square-foot renovation on the 20th floor. Designed to meet Northern Trust’s established workplace standards while tailoring to the operational needs of its Human Resources, Legal, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Treasury teams, the new space reflects a thoughtful balance of consistency, flexibility, and brand expression.
The design centers on creating a warm and professional environment that supports how Northern Trust’s Partners—its term for employees—connect, collaborate, and thrive. The arrival sequence sets the tone: a branded reception area and interview suite welcome candidates and visitors, presenting a confident first impression that communicates the company’s values and culture. Adjacent to this entry, a 75-person multipurpose room offers a dynamic setting for onboarding, training, and company-wide gatherings, reflecting Northern Trust’s ongoing investment in its people and culture of continuous learning.
HED’s design integrates adaptability at every scale. Private offices were conceived to serve dual purposes, functioning both as dedicated workspaces and as small meeting rooms when needed. A series of focus rooms, huddle spaces, and larger conference areas provide a variety of settings for different modes of work—from individual concentration to team collaboration. This layered workplace strategy supports flexibility and choice, aligning with Northern Trust’s broader vision for an agile and connected organization.
The 20th floor also introduces spaces designed for wellness and community. A central business lounge acts as both a break area and social hub, encouraging informal interaction across departments. The space accommodates everything from quick coffee breaks to celebratory events, reinforcing a sense of belonging among Partners who may spend their day in different work zones. Material selections, furnishings, and lighting were chosen to complement the company’s established design language while infusing warmth and approachability.
Environmental performance was another key driver. The renovation was designed to meet LEED Gold certification, integrating efficient systems, sustainable materials, and strategies to enhance indoor environmental quality. These choices reflect Northern Trust’s corporate commitment to stewardship and align with the broader sustainability goals of the 333 South Wabash building.
The result is a workplace that honors Northern Trust’s legacy while supporting the evolving needs of its people. Through smart planning and integrated design, HED created a space that’s both efficient and human—one that invites connection, supports focus, and reflects the company’s enduring presence in Chicago’s skyline.
